If you’ve worked extensively with Microsoft Office, you’re probably familiar with Merlin, the jolly-looking wizard character that animates and offers tips and special features during document creation. I think it’s a neat idea from a marketing perspective to insert Merlin into web pages. Site visitors who have used Office probably associate the character with reliability; it’s a familiar graphic, and something they see when they’re getting work done. This extension lets designers place Merlin, along with his general functions, onto a page, where he can help users understand concepts or, more enchantingly, highlight products.
The nice part of this extension is its nearly effortless ease of use. The character has a great, professional-looking finish and functions easily without a lot of setup or much specialized knowledge. However, I’m not too sure that Mr. Merlin can be used on the vast majority of sites; rather than being a design staple, this extension offers something special that only works with occasional pages, but has a nice effect when it makes sense to incorporate the character.
Merlin can be customized with special messages including links and other elements to add depth to his basic functionality. Working with the download and installation shouldn’t present a problem, as these processes are fairly straightforward. The price is right on this extension given the complexity of the character and its components, but if you’re only going to use the feature once, it might be a better idea to choose a custom-built character for a bit more money.
